You might be surprised to learn just how many delicious types of Arnott’s biscuits there are. From sweet to savoury, chocolate to fruit, indulgence to simple pleasures; it’s no wonder millions of Australians have grown up, celebrated, relaxed, indulged and sustained themselves with our biscuits.
Arnott’s was founded by William Arnott, who was born in Scotland. Upon completion of an apprenticeship as a baker and confectioner, William and his brother David boarded the ship for Australia. However, the journey was for a different reason; he was highly motivated by the gold rush in the early 1850s.
Interestingly, he didn’t strike gold until he returned to his passion for baking breads and pies. In 1865, William opened his first factory in Newcastle and went on to become Australia’s founding father of biscuits.
The famous bird on Arnott’s biscuits is the Macaw Parrot. In the 1870s, on returning from a visit to his native Scotland, William was gifted a colourful macaw parrot by a ship’s captain. Arnott’s famous parrot was originally drawn by William’s daughter-in-law, who had a soft spot for the biscuit-loving bird.
This became the fated fowl that would become the face of Arnott’s biscuits for more than 150 years and counting.
