Pepperidge Farm began in the home kitchen of Margaret Rudkin, a true testament of a mother’s love. Having never baked in her life, Margaret went on to be one of the greatest entrepreneurs specialising in top-quality bread, fine biscuits, pastries, and cakes.

During the Great Depression in 1929, the Rudkins’ youngest son was diagnosed with asthma and severe allergies. This meant most commercially processed foods were off-limits in his diet. To ensure her son never missed out on the food he loved, Margaret learned how to bake all-natural stone-ground whole wheat bread with no preservatives. Despite the doubts, Margaret proved that it was possible to bake nutritious bread that was delicious and healthy.

Margaret began selling her premium bread in the local grocer. Despite a rocky start, it was the wonderful savoury taste of her bread that won over the sale. Word began to spread about this extraordinary product, and soon the tiny company grew. Without a business model or strategic plan, Margaret’s sheer determination was ensuring every loaf was as good as it could be.
